Some items will have wheels on and you need to push and pull a load and this could be a trolley. It could be here, we got the wheelie bins, or it could just be an office chair. Now, it is always better to push a load rather than to pull it, but before you even get started, you need to do a little mini risk assessment. You see where you need to move the load to, are there any brakes on the load? What sort of approximate weight? And these are quite bulky in physical size, they are quite heavy to move even when empty. If this was full of rubbish, it will be even heavier.

So with any item you are pushing, it is ideal to have it between shoulder and waist height and on this one there is bars there, so you can make sure you hold it in exactly the right position as you are pushing it. The other big consideration is what the ground is like. If you are in a flat warehouse with a smooth floor that might be quite easy to push and in those instances, something just as small as a 100-kilo load is gonna take about two kilos of energy or 2% of the weight to actually get it moving. If the ground is uneven, the amount of energy to push is increased by up to 10%. So 100 kilogram load, you need another 10 kilos of pressure to actually get it moving. So the problem with anything on wheels is not only the effort it gets to start it, but also to stop it.

So you have got to make sure with something like this, we are not gonna run our feet over. Nothing is gonna come out, there is not gonna be a health and safety concerns and it is not gonna get away from us. So it may well be that we need two people to move it. If it is on a slope, it is hard work to move because this is sort of weight here on a slope very quickly can pull away from you and it might come back and hit somebody or a car or something like that. So when you are moving a load like this to start with, work out where you are going, take the brakes off. These types have bins got a lever you push down to lock the brakes and you push your foot on the top and it releases the brake. Once that is clear and free and you can get a hold of it and move it, then move it to where you need it to put. And every time you stop or leave it on a slope, always put the brakes back on. And finally, when you are actually pushing off to start, the actual effective weight can double the amount of energy you need at that start point and also at the stop point and always walk a steady walking pace, never push them along really, really quickly because the weight would just get away from you.
